Extrachromosomal element delta in Drosophila melanogaster. 8. Inseparable association with sensitive second chromosome.
نویسنده
چکیده
The presence of delta is always accompanied by a sensitive second chromosome in Drosophila melanogaster or vice versa. The separability of delta and the chromosome line was investigated in experiments designed to eliminate delta or to suppress its multiplication for a number of generations. Cy/S(b)-5 males which transmit a minute amount of delta b (retained by chromosome S(b), kills S(b)/S(b) and S(b)/S(r) zygotes) to their progeny were backcrossed for 61 generations to Cy/Pm females which carried no delta. After backcrossing 465 Cy/S(b)-5 males were individually examined for retention of delta, and all were found to retain delta b in its latent state. A homozygous strain for the S(r)-20B chromosome which retained a minute amount of delta r (retained by chromosome S(r), kills S(r)/S(r) zygotes) was obtained. 1,252 Cy/S(r)-20B females derived from the homozygous strains at the 21st generation were tested individually for delta retention. All females tested were found to retain delta r in its latent state. The delta retention in S(b)-5 chromosome lines isolated from S(r)-Cy/S(b)-5 heterozygous strains which carried delta r but not delta b was examined. The descendant Cy/S(b)-5 lines from the heterozygous strains had accumulated their specific delta, delta b. These findings are consistent with those obtained in an earlier study, and lead to the conclusion that delta is associated inseparably with each specific sensitive chromosome.

Extrachromosomal element delta in Drosophila melanogaster. VII. Relation to fertility in a second-chromosome line.
The ID(b)-45 chromosome line usually carries an appreciable amount of delta b, but it is not susceptible to the killing action of this delta. The fertility of this line was examined when it carried various amounts of delta b. More than one third of the Cy/ID(b)-45 males and females tested became sterile when they carried cytoplasm of the Cy/Pm stock which is assumed to carry no delta b. The num...
متن کاملAconitase and Developmental EndPointsasEarly IndicatorsofCellularToxicity Induced by Xenobiotics in Drosophila Melanogaster
Background: In this study, the toxicity of the different xenobiotics was tested on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster model system. Methods: Fly larvae were raised on food supplemented with xenobioticsat different concentrations (sodium nitroprusside (0.1-1.5 mM), S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5-4 mM), and potassium ferrocyanide (1 mM)). Emergence of flies, food intake by larvae, and pupation h...
متن کاملConcentration dependent effect of morphine, aspirin, capsaicin and chili pepper hydro alcoholic extract on thermal and chemical pain model in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...
متن کاملLocalization of the Genetic Factors Responsible for the Kinetic Activity of X Chromosomes of Drosophila Melanogaster.
HE genetic analysis of kinetic activity in Drosophila melanogaster based T on the fate of first anaphase bridges derived from double crossing over within heterozygous inversions made it possible for centromeres to be characterized as weak or strong. The experimental basis for the distinction between these two types was described earlier (NOVITSKI 1952) and a more detailed description of the gen...
